If you like to go to estate sales to find a bargain or you inherited a mountain of jewelry, you can use this as a guide. For starters, get a strong magnet, the small disk shaped earth magnets you have on your fridge will work. 

1. Take the magnet and gently put it up against the gold or silver jewelry and see if the jewelry sticks to it or not. If it is a strong reaction the piece is most likely costume jewelry. Sort all of those pieces and put them in a separate pile. This is a good quick way to pull out pieces that are not real. Just because it passes this test doesn't insure that it is real...it just takes fakes out immediately.
2. Assuming you have completed the magnet step, get a magnifying glass if you have one and look for stamps. sterling, 10k, 14k etc. If you see these markings there is a good chance the item could be real. If it is a ring, the stamp will be located inside the band. Now, there are fakes out there that are stamped too...a professional jeweler can help you determine if it is real or not.
